There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is not allowed. Eight casinos are based in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are apparently needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and sixty table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that contains a number of amenities on top of the casino, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight tables.
